Tetsujin 28 Monument

The Pioneering Giant Robot Anime

The Tetsujin 28 Monument was erected in Wakamatsu Park in the Shin-Nagata district of Kobe City and was designed after the anime character Tetsujin 28 created in the 1950s by Mitsuteru Yokoyama, who was a famous manga artist of Kobe origin.

In Wakamatsu Park in the Shin-Nagata district of Kobe City, there is a 18m Tall Giant Statue, which is an iconic robot anime character in Japan, Tetsujin 28 鉄人28号.

In the 1950s, the famous Japanese cartoonist Mitsuteru Yokoyama began the creation of the manga Tetsujin 28 (Iron Man No. 28), and soon after related animation and film works came out one after another. Tetsujin 28 is Japan's First Giant Robot Anime, and is a story about Shotaro Kaneda, a boy who fought the enemy with his father’s huge robot Tetsujin 28 during World War II.

Mitsuteru Yokoyama, a talented manga artist born in Kobe City, was only 22 years old when he created Tetsujin 28. In his more than half a century as a manga artist, he created many Chinese and Japanese historical mangas such as Water Margin and Romance of the Three Kingdoms, etc. In 2004, Mitsuki Yokoyama died of a fire unfortunately, and this statue of Tetsujin 28 was erected In memory of Mitsuki Yokoyama in 2009, and there are introduction and display areas for more of his works in the nearby shopping street.
