The Bund

Shanghai's Golden Years

The Bund in Shanghai is an indelible mark on the city, just like Tiananmen Square in Beijing. The 23 modern buildings on the Bund, known as the "World Architecture Fair", are the epitome of Shanghai's century-long modern history.

More than a hundred years ago, the Bund was the window through which the western economy and culture entered China, and today it is the focal point of global attention. On the one-kilometer-long Bund stand 23 century-old buildings that encompass almost every form of architectural art in the world,   they are called World Architecture Fair.

When the port of Shanghai was opened in 1843, the western capitalists, especially the British, landed on the Bund. They set up numerous foreign firms and started trading in Shanghai. From the end of the last century to the 1930s, this period was known as the “Golden Age of Shanghai”, with major foreign banks taking root on the Bund, and the Bund was even given the title of “Wall Street of the East”. During this period of time, tall Western-style buildings sprung up, the Bund underwent dramatic development and change almost every day, and it is this phase that forms the look and scale of the Bund complex, the 23 buildings today are mostly built at that time.

Manywhere Trivia:
The current Pudong Development Bank building on the Bund was once the site of Shanghai government offices.

At the same time, the Bund has also become a stage where Shanghai’s elite and the world’s most famous people frequent. Not only it is home to Upscale Hotels and Restaurants, but industrial modernization has also led to the creation of a steel bridge across the river on the Bund: Waibaidu Bridge.

There are two things you can’t miss on the Bund: detailing each building’s life and history, their design and decorations, as well as strolling the Bund observation deck and looking across the Huangpu River at Shanghai’s Financial Core: Lujiazui. The Oriental Pearl TV Tower, the Jin Mao Tower, the Shanghai World Financial Center, the Shanghai Center… This The Skyline of Lujiazui is the business card of Shanghai today.
