Yokohama Masobyo Temple

A-Ma Faith Around the World

In 2006, the Yokohama Masobyo Temple was opened in Yokohama's Chinatown, symbolizing that Chinese Mazu Faith blossomed in the famous coastal city of Yokohama. Worshiped by the local Chinese, it is said that Mazu, the Holy Heavenly Mother can relieve disasters, heal the sick, and bless the fishermen with safety at sea.

In 2006, the Yokohama Masobyo Temple 横濱媽祖廟 was opened in Yokohama Chinatown, symbolizing that Chinese Mazu Faith blossomed in the famous coastal city of Yokohama.

Chinese Mazu (A-Ma) Faith originated in the Northern Song Dynasty and was common in the coastal areas of southern China and was introduced to Japan a long time ago. The Yokohama Masobyo Temple is Greatly Worshiped by Local Chinese after its completion.

In addition to Mazu or A-Ma, She is worshipped under various other names and titles, such as Mazupo (Granny Mazu), Tianfei (Princess of Heaven), Tianhou (Empress of Heaven), etc.

The main gate of the Yokohama Masobyo Temple has a plaque that reads Tianhou Temple and behind it is a Main Hall with an Octagonal Roof. The Main Hall is dedicated to Mazu, The Empress of Heaven, who is said to be able to relieve disasters, heal the sick, and bless the fishermen to sail safely. On both sides of Mazu, there are other deities such as the Qianliyan (Thousand-Mile Eyes), the Shunfeng’er (Wind Accompanying Ears), the Yue Lao (Old Man under the Moon), and Wenchang Wang (God of Culture and Literature).
