History of the Port City
The Yokohama Port Museum is located in the Nippon Maru Memorial Park in the Minato Mirai 21 district of Yokohama Port, next to the sailing ship Nippon Maru. The museum introduces the history of the Yokohama Port from its opening to the present, as well as its structure and functions, through the Yokohama Port History and Rediscovering Yokohama Port exhibitions.
The Yokohama Port Museum 横浜みなと博物館 is located in the Nippon Maru Memorial Park in Yokohama Minato Mirai 21, next to the training sailboat Nippon Maru. The museum was formerly known as the Yokohama Maritime Museum, which was established in 1989. In 2009, the museum completely renewed its exhibits and changed its name to the Yokohama Port Museum. In the same year, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Yokohama’s opening, a 106-meter-tall Yokohama Marine Tower was built outside Yamashita Park next to the port, becoming a symbol of the Yokohama port.
The Legendary Sailing Ship
The Nippon Maru is a Sail Training Ship that has trained 11,500 cadets and sailed a total of 1.83 million kilometers in half a century since her debut in 1930. In 1983, the Sailboat Nippon Maru is permanently docked in Yokohama Dockyard No. 1 for visitors to experience.
The Yokohama Port Museum has two permanent exhibits, “Yokohama Port History Exhibition” and “Rediscovering Yokohama Port”. The Yokohama Port History Exhibition divides the past 105 years into seven stages, which are presented through Tanker Tokyo Maru, Passenger and Cargo Ship Argentina Maru, and many pictures and historical materials. Visitors can follow the footsteps of history and review the ups and downs of this international port city and recreate the golden age of the Japanese shipping industry.
The Rediscovering Yokohama Port introduces the structure and functions of Yokohama Port from different perspectives, including port construction, cargo transportation, shipbuilding, repairment, and environment. You can even virtually experience the tension and excitement of sailing a ship through Yokohama Port in different weather and climate conditions by doing it yourself.
